Why is there a discernment phase before starting the rector search?
It is considered best practice within the Episcopal Church to have a time of reflection before calling a new rector. This discernment phase allows St. Peter's to celebrate its heritage; gather useful information about who we are as a parish family and what our aspirations are; and define our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and values. Such a period is particularly crucial in our search given Ruth Kirk's wonderful ministry among us.
How does this happen?
We will carry out a self-study of the parish. Various means of listening and gathering responses will be employed, including a completion of a parish survey, phone and personal visitations, and parish meetings.
What will be the outcome of the self-study?
The product of this first part of the search process is a narrative profile of St. Peter's which will be used to introduce prospective candidates to the mission, ministries and future plans of our parish family. The profile will typically contain the following: history of the church, current mission, ministries, statistics, facilities, budget and financial data, vision and plans for the future. From this prospective of past, present and future, the search committee will identify the skills and gifts necessary for a new clergy leader to assist us as we move forward in our vision.
Who is on the self-study team?
The vestry has asked the Long Range Planning Team to lead the self-study process. As such, the core members of the group are
