Meet our New Minister of Music
St. Peter's Family,
It is with tremendous joy that I share the good news that we have a new Minister of Music. Dr. Joyce Chen comes to us from Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church in Lansdale. Joyce has served several congregations as organist and choir director including an Episcopal one in New York. She begins a PhD program this fall at Princeton
and is an accomplished harpsichordist. She is excited about returning to the Episcopal Church as a musician and as a person of faith.
This was an amazing process and I am grateful to the members of the Search Committee, Charlie Hannum, Dave Mosteller, Laurel Mosteller, Bill Stevers and Linda Toia who worked faithfully throughout the summer to get to where we are at this moment. I am also grateful to our Interim Music Team, Kathy Flaherty, Tim Flaherty and Dave Mosteller for their steady leadership and devotion to our Music Ministry program. We will celebrate and honor them on October 14.
I am thrilled to have Joyce join us at St. Peter’s. She is a gifted musician, a woman of integrity with a deep faith and a joyful spirit. Her first Sunday will be All Saints' Day, November 4.
With joy and gratitude,
A native of Taiwan, Dr. Joyce Chen most recently served as Music Director at Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church, where she directed a 25-voice adult choir and a 20-member wind ensemble. In addition, Joyce was Artist-in-Residence at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Wilmington, Delaware, where she curated a music concert series and performed regularly at their special events.
As a harpsichordist, Joyce has been gaining recognition both nationally and internationally. She was invited to perform and compete in competitions in France and Belgium. You can watch some of her performances on her Youtube Channel and website: www.joycechenmusic.com.
Joyce holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Harpsichord Performance from Stony Brook University. This fall Joyce begins a PhD program in Historical Musicology at Princeton University.
As someone who did not grow up going to church, Joyce found her Christian faith during her initial organ studies at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley, CA. During graduate studies on the East Coast, Joyce continued her spiritual journey while working as a professional church musician at various churches. In 2014, Joyce was confirmed and baptized at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Patchogue, NY, where she also served as Music Director.
Joyce is beyond thrilled to become our next Minister of Music and looks forward to serving and worshiping at St.
