During a time when food insecurity is rising and government support systems are being reduced, ministries like our Food Cupboard are more vital than ever. With that being said, St. Peter's Food Cupboard is going through a period of transition, as we find ways to serve the community better, from the introduction of the community fridge to making room for new volunteers.
The reflections below, both from long-time volunteers and new leaders, remind us how important it is to continue this impactful work. May their words encourage your discernment and stewardship.

As I step back from managing St. Peter’s food cupboard, I would like to share my experience. The food cupboard was started by Decan Pat. When she retired, she asked for a volunteer to run it. I was happy to take over the ministry which I have managed for nearly fifteen years.
Previously, as I sat in the congregation, I had the experience of seeing the food basket (now our red wagon) be carried up to the altar every week and I always meant to donate food but never remembered to shop for it. One year as my Lenten discipline I committed to bringing food to church every week. When Easter came, I had made it a habit that has continued to this day.
Giving back in this way is very meaningful. I give thanks to God when I sit down at my dinner table every night with a nourishing meal. I think of those who do not have that privilege and I wanted to act.
It is not easy to pass on the management of the food cupboard but with my responsibilities as a Vestry member, Peoples’ Warden and the Welcome Team chair, I could not give the food cupboard the time and attention that I wanted to give it.
In recent years Rick DeKalb has joined in helping me. I am pleased to say that Rick will continue to do so along with the very capable help of Terita Reeve. Many thanks to her for coming forward.
My God feed the hungry,

When Mike and I first came to St. Peter's, the first thing we saw was the Food Cupboard. That was my first indication that this was a Church community reaching out beyond our doors to try and help other people. That really means a lot to me. We've happily supported the Food Cupboard since then. And I was happy for the opportunity to step in and do whatever I can to help! Many thanks to Audrey for her years of service. And thanks to Rick for helping this rookie learn the ropes!

The cupboard at St. Peter's is continuing to serve the neighborhood thanks to people like you, our wonderful parishioners.
It is an important ministry in these tough times. More people are food insecure than at any time during the Covid crises. Cans of soup, fruit, and paper products (toilet tissue, paper towels, etc.) are especially appreciated.
Thanks again,
Rick DeKalb
