God’s Love Never Changes was written by a husband-and-wife team, Dick and Melodie Tunney. Melodie grew up in a minister of music's home, while Dick's family members were everyday working folks. Their Christian upbringings pointed them toward the evolving musical groups that emerged during the birth of what we now call Praise Music. As a married couple, they moved to Nashville to become part of the creative community, but they focused on sacred music that was upbeat and appealing to the youthful members of churches across America.
Our Anthem was written in the 1990s and carries a powerful, timeless message. It is as relevant today as it was back then—that God’s love for us is steadfast and unchanging. At first glance, one might think it would be a difficult anthem to learn and sing well; however, fear is quickly dispelled as the vocal lines follow a repetitive rhythmic pattern that continues throughout. The melodic notes change, but the pulse remains as the foundation. There are several verses, each followed by a chorus telling us that “God’s Love Never Changes, His Love Never Fails.” These sections place great emphasis on those words, with less movement but more strength and conviction. The melody and rhythm provide the basis for driving the message home to all.
The closing section includes a key change to maintain musical interest, along with a pulsating accompaniment as the voices become stronger and more sustained. As you hear those forceful measures, be ready for a very special ending.
