Anthem Spotlight: In The Garden-6.12.15

For the next couple of months, our time of Liturgy will be enriched by solos and small ensembles who will bring the music forth. We begin this week with Kristina Marchuk. Kristina is a talented musician who plays both clarinet and alto saxophone. She has chosen In the Garden as the selection she will offer on the clarinet.

C. Aston Miles was quite inspired by the biblical story of Mary Magdalene’s meeting with Jesus after His resurrection. They met in the garden where He had been buried, as is told in John 20. It is said that Miles was actually able to picture himself in this scene as he walked through his daily life.

The lyrics of the hymn begin with “I come to the garden alone,” indicating Miles’ intimate relationship with Jesus. It continues to speak of faith and its transformative powers. We learn that there is true joy in spiritual connection. Miles chose a garden as the physical setting for his hymn, as it is often the symbol of a peaceful setting—just the place for reflection and divine connection. For many years, this hymn was a favorite to be chosen for a funeral or memorial service. It captures the essence of our spiritual encounters with our early loved ones so beautifully.

There is a very brief introduction followed by the first section played by clarinet and piano. The piano picks up the mid-section, or what would have been the second verse. The final section reflects a slightly raised key change and blend of clarinet and piano. Although our offering is without words, we will do our best to set the mood for your inspiration.
