Consider Serving on the Vestry

Thinking about serving on Vestry may be the last thing on anyone’s mind during this busy holiday season. And yet, because new Vestry members are elected at the Annual Meeting in January, we ask that you carve out some time before the end of the year to prayerfully consider Vestry service.

You may not immediately think you have the necessary “gifts” for Vestry service. However, you have significant wisdom and skills from life experience. Vestry service can be deeply rewarding. Vestry members develop lasting friendships and continually learn from each other. They typically discover their own leadership and decision-making skills. As a small community of their own, they support each other and have fun in the process. Vestry members learn how St Peter’s works “behind the scenes”. They decide how church resources are used for current needs and how they are conserved for future generations. They become familiar with how the Diocese of Pennsylvania supports St. Peter’s and vice versa. They are aware of their important role in the life of their spiritual community.

If you are considering Vestry service, take time to honestly and prayerfully discern how you are being called. What might be the opportunities and challenges for you? How do current and former Vestry members describe their experience? What do friends and family think about what you have to offer and what Vestry service might offer to you?
